A low-level laxative enema is the introduction of a laxative solution into the intestine with a nozzle through the rectum. The purpose of a low-level enema is to induce intestinal peristalsis and facilitate the expulsion of its contents.

The nurse performs a low enema to relieve constipation or fecal impaction, preoperative bowel emptying, and endoscopy (orthoscopy, colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy)
